Packaging Design & Brand Identity
The Challenge
In alignment with my commitment to project-based learning, this assignment challenged students to develop a complete brand identity for a consumer product. The goal was to move away from hypothetical theory and engage in a hands-on, experiential model where the student had to consider everything from the logo and typography to the physical form factor of the box and bottle. The specific challenge here was to identify a niche audience and design a product that spoke directly to them.
The Pedagogical Approach
Savannah chose to target "book lovers" with a fantasy-themed perfume. To support her vision, I acted as a facilitator, encouraging her to lean into her specific artistic strengths rather than imposing a "singular aesthetic" or standard minimalist design trend. We utilized "design thinking" to ensure the visual storytelling—the elf warrior illustration and Art Nouveau-inspired linework—aligned logically with the scent profile ("Jasmine & Smoke") and the target demographic. This process nurtured her individuality, allowing her to combine original illustration with rigorous package design standards.
The Outcome
The final result is a striking example of a student finding their "unique voice." By avoiding the "risk of homogenizing" the work, Savannah produced a package that is distinct, professional, and deeply personal. The inclusion of the "stainless steel bookmark" demonstrates a deep understanding of her audience—a direct result of the problem-solving skills emphasized in the course. This project perfectly illustrates how fostering creativity and passion leads to design solutions that are confident and market-ready.
