Theory, Practice, and Ecosystems:
A Research-Led Approach to Graphic Design Education
My pedagogy bridges thirty years of executive creative direction with contemporary research in emergent technologies, explicitly preparing undergraduate designers to navigate the ethical and technical landscapes of an AI-driven industry. Rather than separating creative scholarship from classroom instruction, my active research directly serves as the structural foundation for undergraduate coursework. This integration is exemplified in my research presentation, "Source Code of the Soil: Semiotics & Heritage in Digital Design," where I map regional historical archives directly to user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design frameworks. I teach design thinking not as a sterile, software-bound exercise, but as an active, living continuation of human visual language, cultural memory, and civic infrastructure.
Cultural Semiotics and Responsive Web Systems (GD 220)
In GD 220: Visual Culture II: Narrative, I challenge the standard, Western-centric design history canon by introducing students to qualitative site research and data collection. Students translate these complex narratives into comprehensive, high-fidelity responsive family website prototypes engineered entirely within Figma.
This pedagogical architecture serves as a direct foundation for my concurrent creative scholarship, Source Code of the Soil: Semiotics & Heritage in Digital Design, which I presented at the 2026 Spring Symposium. While students independently investigate and catalog their own diverse family lineages, my research uses this studio environment to analyze the deep structural intersections between ancestral design methodologies and modern digital interface paradigms.
Through this project-based model, students master the mechanics of digital product design—executing boolean path operations, constructing complex layout grids, and organizing interface components to handle multi-screen responsiveness.
In my parallel research, I map these exact student workflows to historic material practices, demonstrating how contemporary software mechanics mirror traditional folk logic. For instance, I parallel the students' component-layering choices in Figma with the 150-year-old spatial logic of Polish Wycinanki paper-cutting, mapping physical paper stacking directly to digital asset positioning and UI Z-indexing.
By anchoring interface prototyping in qualitative heritage data, students look past superficial software execution; they learn to leverage digital design tools as a profound, scalable medium for identity, representation, and community preservation.
Product Architecture and Professional Systems (GD 202)
To demystify the transition from static layout to advanced market execution, my coursework in GD 202: Professional Practice II: Processes and Systems positions the student as a technical product strategist. This is anchored by the Personal Vision Quest App Design initiative, where undergraduates engineer bespoke, user-centered career applications. Rather than stopping at non-functional UI mockups, students actively co-author code alongside emerging generative AI programming frameworks to deploy fully functioning mobile applications.
The public and institutional efficacy of this curriculum was recognized in a 2026 regional news feature by WAOW News, which detailed how my students successfully bridged the gap between visual design and live software development using AI-driven coding. By grounding emerging technologies in strict parameters of functional logic, user-experience testing, and ethical application pipelines, students graduate with an empirical track record of media-vetted, high-fidelity technical performance.
Spatial Interactivity and Spatial Computing Workshops
Beyond traditional desktop parameters, my pedagogy actively pushes into the physical-digital divide. Backed by my institutional research funding for immersive design curricula, this fall I will lead a specialized academic workshop where students build custom Augmented Reality (AR) experiences.
In these environments, students blend physical materiality with spatial computing pipelines. They manipulate machine learning algorithms, manage asset optimization for digital viewports, and explore node-based compositing. This frameworks-first approach prevents students from becoming passive consumers of turnkey software templates. Instead, they are trained as creative disruptors who understand the technical limitations, user ethics, and spatial possibilities of emerging interactive environments.
Administrative Vision and Collaborative Leadership
By evolving the traditional teacher-student dynamic into a peer-to-peer collaborative agency environment, I dismantle top-down instructional models. I serve as a facilitator who tailors critique frameworks to validate the diverse lived experiences, socio-technological backgrounds, and distinct aesthetic voices of my students.
My extensive background as an independent agency owner, paired with active service on interdisciplinary program development teams, allows me to scale these strategies across departmental structures. I prepare contemporary undergraduate designers to graduate not merely as proficient technical operators, but as critical, ethically grounded visual historians, systemic thinkers, and innovative creative leads who are fully equipped to pilot an evolving global discipline.
